A Prayer for Establishing New Traditions
Gracebased |
Good father,
As our family
creates something new this season—
that ritual, rite of passage, or experience
that will becomes ours:
our tradition.
For this first–
Whether enjoying that Christmas comedy,
Seeing lights together,
Or cooking grandma’s lasagna…
May we be mindful
Of presence over perfection.
Not demanding or obligating
A certain kind of memory,
But rather one
That’s messy, imperfect, vibrant, and all.
Real.
Human.
Truly memorable.
The kinds you made with your people—
Festivals of lights,
Pilgrimages to Jerusalem,
Passover dinners of wine, bitter herbs, and tender hearts.
May we be mindful
In the making of traditions
We are creating spaces
Of expectancy—
Opening hearts to the promise
That goodness, truth, and beauty
Are what’s most real:
In this season.
In this family.
In this life.
And the one to come.
Amen.
