A Prayer for Watching the Clock Go to Midnight
Gracebased |
Good father,
In just a little while
We’ll move from this year to next.
Kazoos
Times Square on TV
Cheering
Kissing
Random fireworks outside
The New Year … almost here.
Why is it that our hearts are happy
When the clock strikes midnight?
Sure, there’s the adrenaline
The sugar highs
The rush of us all being up
But I sense something more
That newness on the horizon
Where hope, mixed with possibility
Wells gladly up inside
“This new year will be better,” we say to ourselves
But what if it isn’t?
What if it’s harder? Sadder? Darker even?
In the highs and the lows of this year to come
I don’t want to begin with resolutions
Or hoping for a better year
But rather
Longing
For a deeper connection with You
And those I love
To set my heart further on Your love
That in spite of setbacks and even growth
I can rest easy
Knowing that surely goodness and mercy
Will follow us
All the days of this coming new year.
